Right to Repair & Crazy Part Prices
Right to repair is something I've always advocated for, especially with 3D printing and using CAD to design and make replacement parts. Many times in life I have come up against the issue of replacement parts being more costly than the Item I am trying to repair or being too costly for what they often are, A broken or lost piece of tiny plastic.
A great example today is an old Dewalt Mitre Saw I repaired for my father. Unfortunately its missing the Guard Wheels. A new set by the time shipping and taxes are accounted for ended up costing me €25 with the insult being only one set arrived. The guard needs 2. Paying €25 for what amounts to two small metal clips and two wheels no bigger than 16mm in diameter was admittedly, stupid, especially when in the end only one pair arrived. I will personally chalk that up to the alure of convenience and single click shopping.
So I decided to 3D model and print replacements instead. I haven't seen them uploaded online or available so I have published a copy to thingiverse and cults3d.
If you have a Dewalt Mitre Saw that is any of the following, dw700 dw701 dw707 dw707e, you can download the files from the following links.
